Macklemore and Kendrick Lamar squared off in many categories at the 2014 Grammy Awards, and couldn't be more different as rappers, but they're actually friends.
This was evidenced by Macklemore's classy, apologetic text last night after he cleaned up and Lamar was shut out - something he feels was
unfair.
fWith Macklemore winning four Grammys and Kendrick winning none, the Seattle rapper has morphed into quite the villain online for sweeping Lamar.
However, Macklemore agrees with the haters. He took to Instagram to post photos of text messages he sent Kendrick, all but apologizing for his win.
Admitting he robbed the up-and-coming Compton rapper of an award that even he felt belonged to Kendrick, Macklemore's Instagram photo caption read:
"My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album... I'm honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys."
"But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that's taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it's proper respect. With that being said, thank you to the fans."
"You're the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all.
"That's what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys"
This wasn't a one-off text engineered to stave off the online vitriol, either. The two have an actual relationship, and the respect appears to be mutual.
These texts come a day after Macklemore posted another text exchange between himself and Lamar where they hyped each other up before the Grammys.
If there's bad blood, it's between fans ... not the rappers themselves.
