
The
police on Tuesday arraigned a 36-year-old driver, Abdullateef Ademola,
before an Ibadan Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly driving
recklessly on the highway and killing a Customs officer.
Ademola, a taxi driver, was arraigned
before the court sitting at Iyaganku on a three-count charge of reckless
driving, murder and causing injury to others.
The prosecutor, Inspector Aliu Samad, told the court that the accused drove a Nissan Micra car with number plate BDJ 858 XA in a dangerous manner.
The accused, Samad alleged, drove the
car “having no regards for other road users and caused the death of one
Eyong Wisdom of Nigeria Customs Service.”
He said the accused person also caused severe injury to one Ena Nsad of Nigeria Customs Service with the same car.
The offence was said to have been committed on January 1, 2014 at about 2.00 p.m. at Samonda area of Ibadan.
Samad said the offence contravened
Section 4 (i) of the Reckless and Dangerous Driving Act, Volume V and
section 3 (e) and 18 of the Road Traffic Laws, Volume V, Cap 142 Laws
of Oyo State, 2000.
The accused person, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. Olaide Amzat, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
Amzat said one of the sureties must be a civil servant not lower than a Grade level 12 officer or a landed property owner.
He adjourned the case till January 27, 2014.
